August 27-31

Math
We will continue on with our unit on Place Value this week. Students will be able to understand and identify numbers on a number line as well as rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

Reading
This week, students will know exactly how to choose a "good fit book." They will also be making connections and reflecting on reading they are doing in class.

Writing
Students will learn all about nouns this week. They will know how to identify nouns, distinguish between singular and plural, and understand the usage of proper nouns. 

Social Studies
Students will understand the what it takes to be a good citizen this week.

Science
We are learning all the ways we can classify matter and will be exploring with some hands-on activities as we classify items by magnetism, temperature, sink/float, mass, and texture

August 20-24

Math
This week in math, students will describe the mathematical relationships found in the base-10 place value system through the hundred thousands place. Students will create and practice writing numbers in standard, word, and expanded form. We will also be locating numbers on a number line this week. 

Reading
Students will learn all about what it means to have a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset during our reading time. We will discuss the term perseverance, and students will create important goals that they have for themselves. They will end the week with reading and completing some growth mindset reading passages. 

Writing
We will be reading A Tiger Tail earlier this week. This story is about a little girl, Anya, who wakes up with a tail and has a crazy first day of school. Students will brainstorm and come up with something crazy that could have happened to them on the first day of school. They will write a short story describing the events of their wild first day! We will end the week with discussing and practicing the importance of reinstating the question when answering a question. 

Social Studies
Students will understand the value of community. Our focus is on how the students can use their individual skills, whatever they may be, to better our classroom community.

Science
Science journals are being set up this week. We will be going over journal expectations, science safety, and by the end of the week I will be introducing our first unit on Classifying Matter.

Reminders
  • Me Museum is due on Friday, August 24th
  • Bring back signed science safety sheet with parent signature by Friday
  • We have a really late lunch this year. Please make sure to send your child with a snack that is filing.













August 16-17

These first two days of school are all about getting to know one another, going over classroom rules and procedures, and finding out what third grade is all about! Students will create our class Social Contract this week, as well as participate in some team building exercises. They will begin setting up their science notebooks and learning about science safety. 

I have so been looking forward to teaching again, and I can't wait to be a part of your child's 3rd grade journey!
